How to Search
Before you jump in and start your research, here are a few basics to consider:
Ask yourself how much time you are willing to spend searching. It can become
very time-consuming; if you feel that your time is better spent on other useful
activities, contact
the Artsleuth and he will do it for you.
If you still wish to conduct your own research, the next step is to devise a search
strategy.
No doubt you will have some information relative to the artist and/or
artwork. Based on this information, scroll down and click on the web link that seems
most applicable. For example, if you know the artist is an American, the Artchive web
link is a good one to begin with. If you do
not find what you are looking for, try the
other links.
Searching for information on the internet can be extremely difficult, so remember
that at any time you can contact the Artsleuth for assistance.
Below you will find a list of useful web sites.

An easy-to-use, alphabetized art history search site that includes artist's name, title,
description & location.
Contemporary Art
An alphabetized site that features a buy/sell and a posting service to locate artists.
The Artchive
An excellent archival site specializing in American art with links to the Smithsonian
Institute.
National
Gallery of Art
Located in Ottawa, this is the best source in Canada for biographical
information on
Canadian art and artists.
ArtPrice

search feature.

A national directory of Canadian artists and art resources.
Infonetware
A simple, "user-friendly," UK metasearch engine that sorts results into a short list of topics. Sometimes I start with this one.
Lastly, do not overlook the major search engines. Yahoo and Google, for example,
produce excellent results.
