David Martsolf

Currently based in New Hampshire, United States, David Martsolf initially applied skills in photorealism to create complex surreal oil canvases with a dark flair. He later realised that the energy and artistic honesty contained in original sketches were of more poetic value to him, which drew the viewer inexorably into a realistic, but ultimately illusionistic space. Today he incorporates the original sketch lines into the artwork itself. Lines in black oil paint and different widths, as well as light or bold surrounding colours to delight the eye in a dance filled with suggested motion. Artworks use sketches that either suggest objects common or understandable in our day-to-day 3-dimensional world or present totally abstract designs.
