Jan Burggraaf
Born in the Netherlands, Jan Burggraaf went to Berlin as a young doctor and worked for nearly two decades in anesthesiology and intensive care medicine. After a long period of illness he decided to do what he felt like: painting. Having without any formal training he bought paint and brushes and started right away.
Jan Burggraaf has been painting his urban environment for 20 years now (with recent excursions into the countryside). Flat colours and clear lines are a tribute to Japanese woodcuts and the Belgian comics of his childhood; the staging of the light represents his effort to continue the Dutch painterly tradition.
