In the Chinese horoscope there are 12 signs of the zodiac and in the first position is the rat. This year's motto is therefore "new beginnings". According to the Chinese calendar, the rat inspires everything about love and money and also helps to get rid of old and bad habits. The bottom line is that a particularly happy year awaits us, in which we will be full of energy to implement creative ideas and make a new start.

As so often in Wolff's work, this picture is also about our view of nature. In our view of the animal we recognize ourselves. For the artist, the rat is the epitome of the survival artist. Cleverly and socially, rats survive in large communities and reproduce exponentially. They love junk food and life in the big cities... The artist plays with the ambivalence that we feel in the face of this sheepdog-sized rat. With a big soulful eye, she looks up shyly at the viewer, her all-too-human hands bravely folded. Whatever she has done, it was not done in bad faith but for a good cause - her own survival...
