Chroma, Werk 2
The Chroma series was the turning point in Mara Ruehl's work. For the first time, she was concerned solely with colour and dispensed with any means of giving structure to the picture. This series of works was the beginning of colour field painting.
These works are intended to encourage the viewer to play with perception and pure vision.
The paintings of the series "Chroma" are based on an extremely differentiated sequence of constructive and destructive processes. The colour elements and structures constituting the picture are applied with brushes, squeegees and spatulas. Already existing layers are overlaid and/or erased by new ones. They form analogies and additions, contradictions and contrasts. They differ both in the traces and the texture and thus refuse to form a unity in the sense of a traditional composition. Due to this technique, the pictures are of a tremendous painterly density. Nothing of what we see can be grasped conceptually.
