In the Chinese horoscope there are 12 signs of the zodiac and in the first position is the rat. This year's motto is therefore "new beginnings". According to the Chinese calendar, the rat inspires everything about love and money and also helps to get rid of old and bad habits. The bottom line is that a particularly happy year awaits us, in which we will be full of energy to implement creative ideas and make a new start.
As so often in Wolff's work, it is about our view of nature and our self-image. The title explains the all too human impression that the adventurous looking rat leaves on the viewer. The painter chooses the rat as alterego, as a survival expert who creates his works at any time and under any circumstances, unfolding his potential. Wolff plays with the various painterly possibilities from precise lifelike reproduction to sweeping gestural strokes and thickly saturated paint. The soft rat skin contrasts with the glassy sheen of the eyes and the delicate gesture of the all-too-human "artist's hands" and thus also quotes the classical craft repertoire of painting.
