We're inside a small, dark walled room, looking out on a small, rock island on which there's a rocking chair. Over on the right, there's a suitcase and above it, hanging from a rack are a suit jacket along with a bowler hat. There are two windows, both revealing a look at the water. Inside, it feels almost claustrophobic, even while looking out on the water just beyond. In front of one window, there's a ladder. What could this all mean? Did the owner of the bowler hat and suit jacket climb out the window and try and wim out to the small rock ilsand to have a seat on the rocking chair? Where could he be? This painting is meant to be somewhat of a mystery. Its dark tones add to the drama.
